60 Minute IPA

Posted: February 8, 2011 in Dogfish Head, IPA

Ahhh, another IPA from Dogfish Head.  Who would have thought that a 60 Minute IPA would differ so much from a 90 minute IPA? Dogfish Head even has a 120 Minute IPA, I’d take a guess that it is super bitter!

Notes: 120z. bottle poured into a Snifter.

Style: IPA

Color: Gold/Amber in color.  Slight, thin head of foam.

Smell: 60 Minute IPA has a very fruity and floral aroma, it really smells wonderful.  Unfortunately, I can’t quite pick out the exact ingredients.

Taste: Mild flavor, consisting of fruit with a hint of floral.  Unlikely it’s big brother, the 90 Minute IPA, this beer was not too bitter at the end.

Drinkability: I would drink 60 Minute IPA again.  I was very impressed with the aftertaste and was blown away by the smell and flavor of this beer.

Price: $4.99 for a 12oz. bottle.

Overall: 60 Minute IPA receives a strong Spade rating.

When I created this challenge I knew that it was going to be tough.  If I had an unlimited amount of money and a ton of free time to drink beer then this challenge might be a breeze.  As the beers flow then the blog posts will flow, but the process is going to be time consuming and slow.  If I don’t post for a few days, don’t worry, a new post will be up shortly.

I stopped by The Perfect Pour on Friday night to pick up some new inventory for myself.  I decided that the mixed six pack was the best way to get in as many beers as possible.  I picked up five different beers from Rogue and one from Dogfish Head.  Five Rogue’s and a Dogfish Head sounds kinda catchy, anyone looking to start a new band can thank me for the name.  Onto the beers!!

The Rogues

Dry Hopped Saint Rogue Red

Dead Guy Ale

Juniper Pale Ale

American Amber Ale

Mocha Porter

The Dogfish Head

60 Minute IPA

Hopefully, I will be able to try each one of these over the course of the next two weeks.  We’ll see how that goes!

World Wide Stout

Posted: January 23, 2011 in Dogfish Head, Stout

Being a fan of Stouts, I was hoping that Dogfish Head’s World Wide Stout would become one of my favorite beers. Unfortunately, that was not the case with this beer.  It may in fact be one of my least favorite beers.

Dogfish Head claims that World Wide Stout is dark, rich, roasty and complex.  It is also brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley. They were not kidding with this claim as this beer is jet black in color.

Notes: 120z. bottle poured into a Pint Glass, Dogfish Head recommends drinking from a Snifter.

Style: Stout

Color: Jet black in color, with no head.

Smell: Roasty aroma, but finishing with a smell of cough syrup.

Taste: Very dry tasting beer.  World Wide Stout has an overpowering flavor of cough syrup that just didn’t appeal to me.  Maybe I’m too naive about stouts, but this beer didn’t taste like any other stout that I’ve had.

Drinkability: I would have to say that I wouldn’t give this beer another try.  The cough syrup flavor was too much for me and the price for one bottle doesn’t help.

Price: $9.99 for a 120z. Bottle

Overall: I would give World Wide Stout a two club ( ClubClub ) rating.

Dogfish Head Chicory Stout

Posted: December 29, 2010 in Dogfish Head, Stout, Winter

Mmmmmm, Stout.

Dogfish Head Chicory Stout does not disappoint, but doesn’t really stand out either.  Being a fan of Stouts, I was excited to try my second beer from Dogfish Head brewery.

As most Stouts go you need to drink Chicory from pint glass.  Chicory Stout pours an extremely dark black/midnight color and had a half inch thick head of foam on it.  This foam stuck around for a good couple of minutes while I got my camera ready to take a picture of the beer bottle and the pint of beer.

Similar to other Stouts the first thing that my nose picked up was the distinctive oatmeal smell.  Taste too, was similar to other Stouts that I’ve had:  a hint of spice, some coffee, and of course the oatmeal.  Chicory Stout was quite creamy and toasty.  I decided to sample it with some chocolate which didn’t really add to the chocolate or the Chicory Stout, but it was a nice pairing.

I would have to say that I would put this on point with other Stouts such as Guinness and Cadillac Mountain.  I can’t decide if Chicory Stout has any qualities that make it stand out against the other Stouts that I’ve had.  Overall, it was a good beer, but I have to believe that there are other Stouts out there that have that wow factor.

Taste:  Spade

Smell:  Spade

Drinkability:  Heart

Price:  Unsure, I purchased a single bottle.  I believe a six pack is $10.99

Overall:  Spade

Prior to heading over to The Perfect Pour, I decided that I was going to buy a bunch of beers at once.  The Perfect Pour allows you to put together your own six packs, for a price, so I figured why not get a six pack of seasonals.

I picked up a Samuel Adams Winter Lager, a River Horse Belgian Freeze Winter Ale, a Dogfish Head Chicory Stout, a RJ Rockers The First Snow, a Weihenstephaner Festbier, a Great Divide Hibernation Ale, and finally a 22oz. Rogue Yellow Snow IPA.

Hopefully, over the next couple of days I’ll be able to knock a few of these out and get the reviews posted here.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

Posted: December 22, 2010 in Dogfish Head, IPA

Another bitter beer?  Not sure how this happened, but it happened.

90 Minute IPA from brewer Dogfish Head, like Mogul Madness Ale, has an extremely high IBU rating.  Somehow Dogfish Head packs in an amazing 90 IBUs into this beer.  For those that don’t know what IPA is, it stands for Indian Pale Ale.  I haven’t had many IPAs and I’ve never had a beer from Dogfish Head, so I didn’t know what to expect.  On the label was a note saying this beer was voted best in America for three years running, so how could I go wrong.

I was overly surprised at how good 90 Minute IPA tasted.  I was expecting another hoppy beer with a strong bitter aftertaste, but this beer has none of that.  Dogfish Head claims that the added barley cuts the bitterness, making 90 Minute IPA a surprisingly smooth beer.  It wasn’t until I had my fourth 90 Minute IPA that I actually poured it into a glass instead of drinking it out of the bottle.  So, I was somewhat surprised to see that it had a golden tan color and again hardly no head.

Overall, I was impressed with how great this beer is and how heavy tasting it was for a lighter color beer.  The added barley was a perfect complement to the extreme amount of hops.  Most of the bitter taste was cut down leaving a smooth taste sip after sip.  Also, the high alcohol content was a surprise.  Maybe I’m a lightweight, but drinking it on an empty stomach really gets you buzzed.  I would definitely count this as one of my favorite new beers.

Taste: 9/10

Drinkability: 9/10

Price: 9/10 ($9.99 for a four pack)

Alcohol Content: 8/10

Overall: 9/10
